Winemaker Note & Critical Acclaim

Terroir-driven minerality remains the hallmark of this vineyard, with aromas of brioche, gingerbread, almond, royal jelly, vine blossoms, jasmine, hazelnut, and Williams pear. The nose is dominated by aromas of mandarin orange, acacia, hazelnut, and grapefruit. Accents of orange blossom, acacia, and vanilla complete the elegant bouquet. Citrus oils, white peach, and lemon highlight the minerality. Wonderfully concentrated and elegant on the palate, the wine is sculpted, rich, intense and creamy. The 2017 La Carrière is enjoyable now and will continue to develop for a decade or more. - Winemaker Note

A barrel sample (mainly from the Hyde clone), the 2017 Chardonnay la Carriere has a drop-dead gorgeous nose of dried apricots, warm pineapple, guava and pear tart with hints of candied ginger, honeycomb and orange blossoms. The palate is medium to full-bodied, rich and creamy with great freshness and some mineral accents coming through on the long finish. 2,560 cases are expected to be produced, to be released in February 2019. - 96 Points Wine Advocate

About The Producer

In 1982, after six years of searching for land to serve as both vineyard and family retreat, Sir Peter Michael and Lady Michael purchased 630 acres of volcanic ridges on the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley. Following Sir Peters "100 by 100" vision 100% family ownership for at least 100 years and drawing inspiration from the great wineries of Burgundy and Bordeaux, the family hired like-minded viticulturists and winemakers to help them create terroir-driven wines that would stand the test of time. Today, with the support of son, Paul, and Paul's wife Emily, the Peter Michael winery still adheres to its original founding principles of mountain vineyards, classical winemaking, and limited production. The estate vineyards rest on steep hillsides ranging in elevation from 1000 to nearly 2000 feet. With 120 acres under vine, the winery is known for single-vineyard and estate grown Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. Under the direction of winemaker Nicolas Morlet (who joined in Dec 2005), all Peter Michael wines are made using a non-interventionist, neo-classical approach, which relies on traditional, hands-on winemaking methods blended with the best of modern technology. Nicolas grew up working on his family's domaine in Avenay Val d'Or, Champagne and later pursued educational & work opportunities that immersed him in the classical winemaking techniques of Champagne, Burgundy, & Bordeaux. Nicolas' passionate approach to classical winemaking with a sense of innovation is natural to Peter Michael Winerys philosophy.
